The 4Cs of Diamonds: A Simple Guide

  • 2 min read

When it comes to diamonds, there are four key factors that determine their value: cut, clarity, color, and carat. These are known as the 4Cs of diamonds.

Cut

The cut of a diamond is its most important factor. It is the way the diamond is shaped and polished, and it has a major impact on its brilliance. An excellent cut diamond will sparkle and shine beautifully, while a poorly cut diamond will appear dull and lifeless.

Scale: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair

Clarity

The clarity of a diamond refers to the number, size, and location of any inclusions or blemishes. Inclusions are natural defects that occur within the diamond, and they can range in size from microscopic to visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded on a scale of FL (flawless) to I3 (included).

Scale: Flawless - Internally Flawless - Very Very Slightly Included - Very Slightly included - Slightly Included - Included

Color

The color of a diamond is graded on a scale of D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). Colorless diamonds are the most rare and valuable, while yellow diamonds are the least rare and valuable. However, it is important to note that even a yellow diamond can be beautiful, and the color of a diamond is a matter of personal preference.

Scale: D E F (Colorless) G H I J (Near Colorless) K L M (Faint Yellow) N O P Q R (Very Light Yellow) S T U V W X Y Z (Light Yellow)

Carat

The carat weight of a diamond refers to its mass. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. The carat weight of a diamond is not as important as the other 3Cs, but it can be a factor in determining its value.
