October Birthstone Ring: Pink Sapphire, Not Opal

october's birthstone month is about a week away, and this year it arrives with more noise than usual. opal is having a real moment — vintage-inspired, warm-toned, showing up across style coverage all season. it's also one of the softer stones you can set in a ring.

when we built our own october ring, we didn't reach for opal. we set it in pink sapphire instead. here's the reasoning, and what it means if opal is still the stone you love.

October's Traditional Birthstone

october has two recognized birthstones: opal and pink tourmaline. opal has held the spot the longest — its name traces back to the sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone, and its shifting color play (called play-of-color, caused by microscopic silica spheres bending light inside the stone) has made it one of the most recognizable gems in the world. pink tourmaline was added to the list later, largely because opal's natural variation makes it harder for jewelers to stock and match consistently — no two stones read quite the same.

Why Opal Is Having a Moment

this year, opal is genuinely back. fall 2026 style coverage keeps circling to it — the color-shifting, iridescent look reads as the opposite of anything mass-produced, which is part of the appeal. it photographs well, it sits naturally alongside the jewel-tone and layering trends already defining the season, and it's one of a kind in a way few gemstones are.

none of that is wrong. opal earns the attention.

What Opal Actually Asks of You

the tradeoff is durability, and it's worth being direct about it rather than glossing over it the way a lot of trend coverage does.

opal sits at roughly 5.5–6.5 on the mohs hardness scale — softer than sapphire, emerald, or diamond, and soft enough that everyday knocks (a doorframe, a countertop, a gym bag) can chip or scratch it over time. it also holds water within its own structure, which means extreme dryness or heat can cause it to crack or craze — fine lines that develop across the surface. none of this makes opal a bad stone. it makes it a stone that asks for a gentler relationship than a ring gets from most people, most days.

Why We Set October in Pink Sapphire

our october toi et moi ring uses a 2-carat emerald-cut pink sapphire as its fixed birth-month stone, instead of opal or pink tourmaline.

the reasoning is mostly practical. sapphire is the second-hardest natural gemstone in the world, right after diamond — a 9 on the mohs scale — which means it can be worn daily, indefinitely, without the extra care opal needs. it still gives october the color story people actually want: warm, rosy, distinct from every other month on the calendar. and it carries its own meaning worth keeping. in gemstone tradition, pink sapphire is tied to joy, emotional openness, and connection — which sits comfortably next to a design built around pairing two stones for two people.

it isn't a swap made to cut corners. it's a swap made so the ring can actually be worn the way an everyday piece is meant to be worn.

If You Still Want Opal

none of this means opal is off the table. it just tends to do better somewhere other than a ring you don't take off.

earrings and pendants see far less daily impact than a ring, which makes them a steadier home for a stone like opal — you get the color play without the everyday risk. if a ring is what you want, opal can still work in a piece worn occasionally rather than constantly, or in a setting with more metal coverage protecting the stone's edges.
