The 4Cs of Diamonds: A Modern Guide

Ready to start your journey to find the perfect diamond? It all begins with understanding the 4Cs: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. As the foundation of a diamond’s value, these four factors are essential to know. At Juwels & Co., we believe that an educated choice is an empowered choice, and we’re here to help you navigate these crucial characteristics.

Cut: The Most Important "C"

Scale: Excellent - Very Good - Good - Fair

The Cut is widely considered the most critical of the 4Cs, as it’s what unlocks a diamond’s true fire and brilliance. The cut refers to a diamond’s proportions, symmetry, and polish—not its shape. An expertly cut diamond will reflect and refract light in a way that creates a stunning sparkle. Even a diamond with perfect clarity and color will appear dull if the cut is poor. When looking at our collection of high-end engagement rings, you'll see how a superior cut brings our diamonds to life.

Clarity: The Window to a Diamond's Story

Scale: Flawless - Internally Flawless - Very Very Slightly Included - Very Slightly included - Slightly Included - Included

When you hear about a diamond’s Clarity, it refers to the presence of any internal characteristics (inclusions) or external marks (blemishes). The diamond clarity grades range from Flawless to Included. While flawless diamonds are the rarest and most valuable, most inclusions are microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. This is a great area to balance your budget, as a stone with a slightly lower clarity grade can still appear perfect to the eye.

Color: A Matter of Personal Preference

Scale: D E F (Colorless) G H I J (Near Colorless) K L M (Faint Yellow) N O P Q R (Very Light Yellow) S T U V W X Y Z (Light Yellow)

A diamond's Color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The most sought-after diamonds are those in the D-F range, which are completely colorless. However, color is also a matter of personal preference. A warmer, near-colorless diamond (graded G-J) can be stunning, especially when set in a yellow or rose gold band.

Carat: The Measure of Mass

Carat refers to a diamond’s mass, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. While it's often confused with size, a diamond's carat is purely about weight. When you’re learning, remember that a diamond's cut and shape can make a huge difference in how large it appears. For this reason, prioritizing the cut over a higher carat weight can often result in a more brilliant and dazzling stone.
